Kent yacht sailing to the archipelago of St Kilda off the coast of Scotland
One of the best sailing schools in the south-east of England, Elite Sailing, is making a voyage to the islands of St Kilda off the north-west coast of Scotland. PR9.NET June 02, 2006 - UK, Kent - A Kent based yacht is setting sail on Saturday 17th June from Dunstaffnage near Oban for an eight-day voyage to St Kilda and back. The crew of seven plus a skipper will be sailing a 46 foot yacht named 'Tonic', a sail training vessel belonging to Elite Sailing from Chatham in Kent. The crew of seven have joined to enjoy a taste of adventure cruising through the western Isles of Scotland. The yacht has made two previous visits to the spectacular archipelago of St Kilda, the remotest part of the British Isles, lying in the Atlantic Ocean, 41 miles (66 kilometres) west of Benbecula in Scotland's Outer Hebrides. The story of the islanders - the last of whom left their village in 1930 - is almost a legend. The remainder asked to be evacuated when they could no longer sustain their centuries-old way of life in the face of modern pressures and resulting population decline. The islands are administered by the National Trust for Scotland and are a dual World Heritage Site with their exceptional cliffs and sea stacs forming the most important seabird breeding station in north-west Europe. Joining a yacht crew is one of the few ways of reaching this remote and exposed location. Dave Allan skipper and principal of the sailing school said: "Weather and sea state permitting the yacht should anchor for a night off the old village allowing the crew a day ashore before heading back to more adventures amongst the western isles before returning to Oban." "This is a fantastic opportunity to explore a historic island, which also has amazing birdlife. My crew and I are really looking forward to this unusual trip." The yacht will also be visiting Mull, Mingulay, Barra, Skye, Tiree, Iona, Islay and Jura, enabling the crew to experience some of the finest sail cruising in Europe and to explore the huge variety of the other islands.
