PR9.NET June 26, 2005 - Take up the Challenge, and discover the excitement and sense of achievement from racing across the Atlantic Ocean in this year's Rubicon Atlantic Challenge. In November, Global Yacht Racing, a Southampton based yacht racing company, are entering a sixty foot yacht in the race, and you can be part of the yacht racing crew.

Global Yacht Racing offers you the chance to train and race across the Atlantic, all you need is commitment, a sense of adventure and an average level of fitness. Ocean Yacht Racing is an exhilarating and challenging adventure that is now being discovered by more and more ordinary people who are looking for the ultimate ride. Why settle for three weeks by a hotel poolside when you can be experiencing the achievement of crossing an ocean by harnessing the power of the wind?

The Rubicon Atlantic Challenge is the largest trans-ocean race in the world; the big boat version of the famous ARC (Atlantic Rally For Cruisers). Racing starts from Marina Rubicon in the beautiful island of Lanzarote in the Canaries, and takes competitors across 2700 nautical miles of Atlantic Ocean to reach Jolly Harbour on the idyllic island of Antigua in the Caribbean.

It is an annual event that attracts over 200 yachts of all types and nationalities. The RAC is renowned for its tight, competitive racing and for its friendly relaxed atmosphere where the emphasis is on fun and completing the challenge of the ocean crossing as much as winning.

The organisers place a strong emphasis on safety and communication, which ensures that competitors are well prepared. Every yacht's position can be tracked on the race organiser's website so that family and friends can keep updated with the progress of competitors.

On arrival in the sunny Caribbean its party time! There are a host of great events organised and you will be able to relax in the beautiful surroundings of Antigua.

Global Yacht Racing's campaign yacht for this event is the Volvo 60. This ocean going machine is capable of achieving speeds in excess of 20 knots. The RAC follows a downwind trade wind route, ensuring fast furious downwind fun.

The Volvo 60 was developed as a high performance and very sophisticated race machine intended to race around the world. These yachts have recorded speeds in excess of 35 knots aided by the use of two and a half tons of water ballast. The Volvo 60 was first used in the 1993 Whitbread Round the World race and raced alongside the more conventional but larger Maxi Yachts to win the Volvo Trophy. The 60's proved to be so much faster that the Maxi Yachts are no longer used for the epic Volvo Round the World Race.

The campaign will start in the late summer of 2005, when the crew will get the chance to train on the Volvo 60 'Venom' in the UK. These powerful yachts are water ballasted with asymmetric spinnakers and prior training is essential.

Crew fee for the RAC is £2800 (approx $5100 US) and includes professional skipper, Safety and Sea Survival course (STCW 95), training weekends, team clothing, use of all personal safety gear throughout duration of training and racing, all race administration costs, berth fees, race entry and boat insurance, full provisions whilst racing and training, 2700+ miles gained and of course the sense of achievement that comes from crossing the finish line after a transatlantic race.

Crew berths on legs from UK to Lanzarote are available prior to the start. Venom and the Global Yacht Racing team are heading into the Mediterranean first to compete in the Rolex Middle Sea Race (22nd October) and affords excellent opportunities for race training and to get to know the yacht. Please enquire if you are interested in joining Venom for any of the passage making or Middle Sea race.
