Hundreds Helped Through Volunteer Mobile Health Outreach Clinic in Belize
Volunteers helped over 200 Belizeans during the course of two days through a mobile health outreach clinic in Belize which served multiple villages composed of recent immigrants from Guatemala who are marginalized by lack of English skills and geographic isolation. PR9.NET September 08, 2004 - Selena, Belize -- Over the course of two days, more than 200 patients were given much-needed medical care in the district of Cayo, Belize. Volunteers from ProBelize, a volunteer organization that implements development projects, in collaboration with Belize Ministry of Health Representative Mario Castellanos helped organize a mobile outreach clinic under the aegis of Rural Education and Community Health (REACH). Relying entirely on donations from letters solicited by ProBelize volunteers, medicines, wound dressings, needles, and other miscellaneous medical supplies were donated by four pharmacies in San Ignacio, Belize. Small monetary donations amounting to $757bz were also collected from project contributions and the Ministry of Health. The mobile field clinic served multiple villages composed of recent immigrants from Guatemala who are marginalized by lack of English skills and geographic isolation. A lack of medical provision and financial resources of these people makes a clinic such as REACH extremely valuable to the community by providing much needed attention and health care. Upon arrival in the first community, two trucks with their beds full of people seeking medical attention awaited the volunteers. The majority of patients were women and children. All patients over age 18 were given tests for diabetes. The commonly presented ailments ranged from gastric problems to anemia and malnutrition to diabetes in men and women, children and the elderly. Over a period of two days, REACH was able to bring medical care to over 200 people who otherwise would not have received it. With the help of ProBelize volunteers and donations from local pharmacies, the REACH clinic brought valuable medical attention to over 200 people in need. The dedication of the ProBelize volunteers provided effective care as their desire to make a change was made possible by providing medical attention to the communities. # # #
