Board of Elections compaing was filed against Mayor David N. Cicilline claiming among other things that the Mayor tried to use his office as Mayor and as a RI licensed Attorney to deny an elderly couple assistance in voting and abused his office by ordering police to remove someone acting lawfully at a poll.

PR9.NET November 12, 2006 - Providence, Rhode Island - A complaint has been filed against Mayor David N. Cicilline with the Rhode Island Board of Elections, claiming among other things that the Mayor tried to use his office as Mayor and as a RI licensed Attorney to deny an elderly couple assistance in voting. It also claims the Mayor abused his office by ordering police to remove someone acting lawfully at a poll.

According to one witness, "the Mayor was throwing a tantrum."

Removed from the Polling place allegedly under orders from the Mayor was Ward 8 Democratic Committee Chairman Wilbur W. Jennings Jr. who filed the complaint along with an affidavit he obtained from a witness inside the polling place.

"Third world countries have it better than this," exclaimed an angry Jennings on Friday. "Anywhere else in the world, a US Ambassador would have filed a protest at the very least," Jennings went on. "It would probably have been an international incident. Is this what the Mayor learned as an international election observer in the Dominican Republic? Is this the kind of action the US Conference of Mayors endorses? "

"This was a FEDERAL and STATE election, and in reality the Mayor was nothing more than another local candidate up for reelection" said Jennings. I was amazed that the Police Officer disregarded his training, my civil rights and the rights of others when he blindly followed the unlawful orders of the Mayor . . . and this Mayor talks about ethics?"

"As a Rhode Island Attorney, politician, international election observer and member of the US Conference of Mayors, Mayor Cicilline knew better than to become disorderly, abuse his power of office to influence an election, disenfranchise voters or use the police power to intimdate poll workers. This was done deliberately."

The complaint was filed on Friday, and Robert Kando, Executive Director for the Rhode Island Board of Elections assured Jennings they would be looking into the matter.
