Australian Immigration and the Changing Face of the Population
The ambitious, insightful, and highly-charged art installation entitled Face of Sydney is a collection of over 1,400 portraits of Sydney residents in face of the growing multiculturalism in Australia today. These photos were manipulated and formed into composites that reflect what the average Sydney resident looks like as layered through the collective population. PR9.NET October 18, 2006 - Hawthorn, Australia -- It's a theme that has always mystified us: the future and its possibilities. This is what a group of 3 Sydney photographers have tasked themselves with, the attempt to pin down that future and capture on film what the future holds for the average Sydney citizen. Australia is best known for its healthy immigration, particularly for its targeting of skilled workers and professionals from all over the world who are expected to contribute to the skills shortage in the country. With the explosion of skilled migrants into the country (particularly Britons, Irish, Italians, Greeks, New Zealanders Indian, Maltese, Vietnamese, Lebanese, Chinese, Malaysian, and Thai), Australia is enjoying a welcome multicultural diversity unlike no other. Sydney is the first port of call for every migrant entering Australia, which is the main reason why the city is perhaps the most kaleidoscopic and democratic when it comes to population. The installation is part of the Art & About exhibit which is set to run in Sydney for the whole month of October. For sheer ethereal effect (as the makers say) and massive scale, the Face of Sydney will be projected on the side of the AMP building at Circular Quay. Set to finish in 2008, the full exhibit will be called Facing Australia.
