What Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS), including symptoms to look for and what the treatment options are.
PR9.NET December 22, 2008 - Carpal tunnel syndrome affects millions of people a year, and continuous to increase in number every year. Swelling and edema of the transverse tissue in the wrist within the carpal tunnel can squeeze and irritate the median nerve. The median nerve passes through the carpal tunnel to receive sensations from the thumb, index, and middle fingers of the hand. Irritation of the median nerve will cause numbness and tingling of the thumb, index, and the middle fingers, a condition known as carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS).
Most cases of carpal tunnel syndrome are idiopathic (unknown origin or cause). Some other cases of CTS are associated with trauma to the wrist, pregnancy (usually bilateral CTS), hypothyroidism, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or acromegaly. Symptoms include paresthesia (sensation of tingling, pricking, or numbness) in the fingers of the hand, weakness of grip, and atrophy of the muscles in the hand.
There are a number of ways to treat carpal tunnel syndrome. In most cases, a chiropractic adjustment to the affected area is an extremely effective solution. Along with a splint to keep the wrist straight and in the neutral position, physical therapy, increase vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) intake, stretching, and strengthening exercises, can in most cases effectively eliminate the symptoms associated with CTS.
