With the dramatic growth in the elderly population in California, it has become important to protect seniors in this state from overly aggressive sales tactics on annuities products and to make all financial professionals knowledgeable of the terms and conditions of the products they sell to elderly consumers. The new California law requires that if an agent is licensed with CDI and wants to continue selling any annuity product (i.e. fixed, indexed, variable), they must complete 8 hours of California-specific annuities before January 01, 2005. Thereafter, in each renewal period they must complete a 4-hour CDI approved annuity-training course to be authorized to sell annuity products. Also, any newly licensed agent must complete the initial 8 hours of training prior to soliciting individual consumers for annuity sales. The CDI is not allowing any exemptions to this rule.
