Initial information will center around the threats to dogs caused by the current nationwide heat wave. Summer heat can not only be dangerous to you it can also be dangerous to your dog. As the temperature rises you will need to give extra attention to the needs of your dog in order to assure their safety Many people don't realize that dogs, just like humans, can get a sun burn if exposed for too long to the sun. To protect your canine friend from the burning rays use the same common sense you would use for your kids. Avoid direct exposure during the peak hours of 10 am to 4 pm. Apply some off the shelf sun block to the areas of your dog's skin where his coat is the thinnest. This would include the ears and underbelly. Avoid the nose and eyes since your pooch would likely lick it off anyway and the risk of a negative reaction from ingesting of the sunscreen is probably great than the risk of sun exposure. Just like their pale human counterparts, dogs with light colored fur are more likely to suffer from the burning effects of the sun. If your animal companion has a light colored coat, don't take him to the beach for the day in the middle of the summer. If you do, be sure to provide plenty of fresh water and a source for shade. If you should notice that any portion of your dog's skin is red or blistered, immediately seek a veterinarian's opinion and care. Dogs do not transmit heat through their skin. To get rid of excess heat they will pant and if really hot their tongues will hang out. To prevent possible heat stroke in the summer months keep your dog in the house during peak hours and provide plenty of fresh, clean water. Between evaporation and greater consumption, your pet's water bowl will need to refilled more often than in the winter. Also, keep the bowl in the shade. Unless you've been living in a cave for the past couple of decades, you already know to never leave a dog unattended in an automobile during the summer months. For quick errands, leave your dog at home. Just like people when it's really hot, avoid strenuous exercise in the heat of the day. If you want to give your dog a bit of exercise or go for a walk, do it in the early morning of around sundown. If your dog is experiencing unusually heavy panting and labored breathing along with bright red gums or eye membranes, he may be suffering from heat stroke. If he has pronounced fatigue or worse, collapses, loses consciousness and starts having seizures call a vet immediately. In the meantime place your dog in a tub of cool water or wrap him in cool, wet towels. Do not use cold water or ice! Either will cause your dog's blood vessels to constrict and impede the body from being able to release heat and could make the problem worse. # # #
