Non-Profit Theater Brings the New York City Homeless on Stage and to Our Attention
The NYC based non-profit theatrical project "At Home on Stage" calls on audiences to witness the stories, truths and artistic talents of the city's homeless and under-served population. PR9.NET November 30, 2007 - New York, New York - Professional actors and improvisers join members of the homeless community to give those who are all too often ignored a chance to share their stories. Individuals in various stages of homelessness-- those who live on the street, those supported by city-run organizations, and those who are in transitional housing recruited from various areas of the city—will work with theater professionals to develop their own performance material. These pieces will address the stigma, trials and tribulations surrounding issues of homelessness. The AT HOME ON STAGE production, will take place at The Church of Saint Paul the Apostle (located at Columbus & 60th Street) on Friday, January 11th and Saturday, January 12th of 2008. These evening performances will be open to general audiences, and the proceeds from ticket sales and additional donations will benefit homeless organizations in the New York City area. Homeless people of all races and backgrounds, who are interested in participating and performing in front of a live audience, will help conceive, develop, and present the work in an 80-minute multidisciplinary show. "Doing theater and creating your own work is an amazing self esteem boost," says event creator Josh Kauffman. As a native of the Midwest who moved to New York City to pursue his acting career, Kauffman is deeply moved by the presence and plight of homeless men, women, and children throughout New York City. "When I moved here ten years ago, I was shocked at how prevalent homelessness was. Over time, I became more complacent about it—that began to worry me, and then to stimulate me to act on it," he says. AT HOME ON STAGE was born of that evolution. New Yorkers, most of all, know the importance of the stage in our culture and city at large, as well as the power of theater to entertain and educate. With this production, homeless individuals have a new kind of platform on which to express themselves—a stage, not the subway. This event will not only bridge the gap between the theater community and the underserved community of the homeless, it will broaden the experiences of the performers and their audiences, allowing both to gain insights into their own prejudices, stereotypes, and the ways in which they can incite positive and effective change. AT HOME ON STAGE is a not-for-profit theater project funded by private donors and organizations that aims to make the plight of the homeless accessible to the greater New York community. # # #
