At twenty four, this classically trained artist born in Russia, has a Doctorate of Musical Arts Degree in concert piano performing and musical theory. Having previously turned down labels and recording offers that just 'didn't fit who she was,' this third generation female of a musically talented family learned early from her mother, (an established concert pianist and university professor) and grandmother (a singer/actress and radio performer), how important focusing on your own dream is. "The most valuable thing I've learned is discipline, practice and that it's never enough…Socrates said "True knowledge exists in knowing that you know nothing." However, having this kind of background and base knowledge, I can "fly" anywhere I want to, possibilities are endless. My training and knowledge and my family's expertise are giving me more confidence and strength to continue my journey in this wild world called the "music business." NEW BEGINNING is representative of both ends of the music spectrum of heartfelt rock power ballads to feisty driving rock songs, peppered with a few dance-beat murmurs. Sonya has three favorite songs on her 13-track CD. "Friend"- is a special song. Everything you hear there is exactly what I was going through. I didn't hold back any of my emotions and that's why it's so personal. Second favorite is "About Love", I wanted to write about life, about serious issues, about politics but the same time didn't want it to be a dark song, so I think I've accomplished what I was going for. And the third one is "Lonely Road." I love it because I play more piano there than on any of my songs on this album, it's dramatic but the same time filled with optimism, I sing about destiny, our chosen paths and belief in ourselves, and that no matter how difficult things can get sometimes, we can make it on our own," explains Kahn.
