Mi-Co took the opportunity at the conference to officially launch the newest release of the Mi-Forms System, Version 5, and the audience came to hear about the real world impacts of the use of handwriting recognition and mobile data capture technology.

Leading off with the keynote address at the 3rd Annual Mi-Co User Group Conference, Mr. Joe Bauman, CEO of Cardinal Brands, assessed the state of the digital ink marketplace with a comparison of the explosion of the personal computer in the 1980s. Mr. Bauman is in a unique historical position for making this comparison. He, currently is CEO of a large scale printing company, Cardinal Brands, that stays on the cutting edge of digital ink and forms technology and previously at IBM, he was one of the key executives tapped to bring the IBM PC to market. Mr. Bauman addressed the key elements that have driven and are driving the explosion in digital ink solutions.

This was just one of the highlights of the Mi-Co Annual Conference held in the Research Triangle Park, NC last week. The event was attended by leaders of organizations that pioneered digital ink solutions in the marketplace. These organizations included Anoto, Logitech, HP, Vision Objects, Motion Computing, Gateway, and Fujitsu. In addition, such innovative organizations that have implemented and funded digital ink applications were in attendance including the IRS, National Cancer Institute, USDA, Spectrasite and Wilson County Home Health.

"This year's event demonstrated the strides taken by organizations in implementing data capture and forms automation processes using the latest in digital ink and handwriting recognition technology," said Jim Clary, CEO of Mi-Co, "The gathering represented a who's who of industry leaders and as Joe pointed out in his keynote, the pioneers have driven this market to the edge of explosion."

• Scott McLaughlin, who has implemented technology at a number of hospitals including Sutter Health, presented on Optiform's Rx for Success in Healthcare…Mi-Forms & Tablet PCs
• Dr. Greg Shorr who has consulted for numerous Indian Health Service programs including Cherokee Indian Health, presented on Digital Forms for Clinical Care
• Vanessa Mills, senior sales development manager for Logitech's digital writing division highlighted the Logitech io2 Digital Pen with Bluetooth wireless technology
• Jon Poppe and Jason Soulier, HP Business Managers presented on the success and impact of the Forms Automation System introduced by HP in 2004.
• Robert Letzeisen of PatienTree, highlighted the use of mobile data capture applications in a hospital setting

User of the Year in Healthcare: Olga Smirnov, Boston Public Health Commission for her outstanding work in the development and implementation of mobile data capture applications for Boston's Well Baby Program
