PR9.NET October 20, 2004 - Phishing, short for password harvesting fishing, is a serious and rapidly growing Global problem for the Internet and e-communication.

According to Symantec Corporation, US banks and credit card issuers suffered a loss close to $1.2 billion in 2003 because of the phishing phenomenon. The Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG) also reported that the average monthly growth rate in phishing attacks is 50%.

Phishing is the luring of sensitive information, such as passwords and other personal information, from a victim by masquerading as someone who is trustworthy and has a real need for such information. Phishing attacks use ‘spoofed’ emails of trusted brands such as banks, online retailers and credit card companies to lure recipients into browsing the fraudulent websites. The fraudulent websites are designed to fool recipients into divulging personal financial data. (e.g. credit card numbers, account usernames and passwords, social security numbers)

The numbers of reports from victims who have been subjected to Phishing for credit card fraud, identity theft, passwords and general personal information is growing at a rate which belittles the UCE epidemic of the past years. The resulting personal financial losses of these individuals is an embarrassment to the institutions who have been fraudulently represented. This act of deception shows no sign of regressing and will continue to grow because of its success.

Gennux eW@LL's Solution

Gennux eW@LL™ is a simple, effective and flexible messaging trap for enterprises of all sizes. In addition to being an anti-spam solution, eW@LL’s technologies can overcome Phishing problem cost-effectively while using existing standard-based systems and needing little or no education for email users. Gennux Sender Confirmation Engine and RecipientKey (eSm@rt Address), provide an impenetrable barrier to malicious messages sent for the purposes of Phishing.

3 Scenarios:

1. Stop The Spoofing Of Emails
eW@LL's Sender Confirmation Engine™ is a powerful tool designed to protect the recipient from spoofed emails (those containing a fictitious From: address).

2. Open Safety Channel
a) ISP will setup a web page to aid their users to create RecipientKey, eSm@rt address, for banks and financial institution
b) Users login to the ISP's webpage with their existing credentials
c) Users generate an eSm@rt address with a simple mouse click
d) Users submit the eSm@rt address as their contact email address and the financial institutions updates the "Customer Profiles". (ISP and Banks work in cooperation to provide these services)
e) Any financial messages sent to users from the Institution other than through this eSm@rt address would be trapped as a possible attempt to defraud a customer.

3. Collect And Report Fraudulent Messages
The collected senders' information of the trapped message and phishing attacks could then be reported to related authorities for further legal actions.

With the cooperation of Telecoms/ISPs all users can safely continue to use their commercial email and Internet online services for any transactions without the threat of having their identity stolen or cohered from them by the unscrupulous organizations or individuals which prey upon the honesty and integrity of their victim.
