Susan Braswell: An Image of Success
Local Artist Gains National Recognition in Professional Photographer. PR9.NET August 10, 2008 - Northern Virginia - Launching a business is a dream for many, but it's a reality only for the few who have the talent, energy and drive to make it happen. And even then, success isn't guaranteed—not by a long shot. In fact, according to a USA TODAY report, only 15 percent of businesses make it through the first year. But northern Virginia resident Susan Braswell stands out from the rest. Her photography business, which she started four years ago, is growing ever more successful and shows no sign of slowing down. In fact, she was recently profiled in the August 2008 issue of Professional Photographer magazine (www.ppmag.com), the official magazine of the Professional Photographers of America. The article, a six-page color spread, highlighted Braswell's work, philosophy and business savvy. Professional Photographer journalist Jeff Kent also explored Braswell's specialty: working with children. "I love new faces, new voices and meeting new people," she told him. Braswell is thrilled with the end result. "It was wonderful to be highlighted in such a well-respected industry publication," she says. "Professional Photographer only features a few artists each year, so I was really quite honored. It also helped validate all the work I have put into growing my business." And part of growing that business means tapping her marketing skills. She and her business have been gaining traction through her Web site, www.susanbraswellphotography.com. And the site has proven to be an effective communication tool for letting prospective clients see work samples and find out her fees. But in seeking a way to have an ongoing dialogue and relationship with her current, past and prospective clients, she also launched her own blog, http://www.susanbraswellphotography.com/blog. The success of both sites demonstrates that Braswell's skills extend beyond the digital darkroom. "The blog is a great companion to my Web site," she says. "I'm able to generate excitement with some 'sneak peaks' of my current projects, and I can get instant feedback. It also lets me share the stories behind the photos." Her communication savvy is especially impressive when one considers Susan Braswell Photography is a one-woman operation—no assistants or support staff. And the result of all of these efforts? A steady stream of clients who are eager to get in front of Braswell's lens. Braswell only does one shoot each allotted workday. That allows her to spend a significant amount of time with her subjects. This is especially important as most of Braswell's work centers on children, who often need a photographer to go the extra mile to bring out that smile or pose that parents will treasure for a lifetime. "This is truly my passion," she says. "And I'm glad that what I enjoy doing brings so much joy to others." # # #
