Information Theft Continues To Plague Businesses Around The United States. A lot of data can be stored on a compact disk or be printed on paper. Discarding this data improperly can lead to identity theft and the loss of important corporate information.

PR9.NET August 11, 2006 - KAYSVILLE, Utah - It is often second nature to throw something in the garbage when it is broken, becomes old or is no longer needed. How many times do employees throw old printouts and CDs in the garbage per day? Once in the garbage, this information becomes available to dishonest custodians, lower-level workers and dumpster divers. Information, once in the wrong hands, could lead to identity theft and the exploitation of top-secret data.

Many people don't realize that once garbage has left the premises of the office building it becomes public domain. Although illegal in some states, dumpster diving is legal in most of the United States. This means anybody can take items from a dumpster and it is perfectly legal. Mail, credit card applications, receipts and other forms could reveal too much information.

Paper shredders are the primary method used to destroy sensitive information. It is recommended to have a paper shredder near every desk used in an office. This could be a small shredder next to every desk, or a larger shredder used by a department. For large companies, some businesses prefer to use larger shredders that can shred up to 400 sheets of paper at once and compact the shredded paper into a bale (http://www.abcoffice.com/demos/abhsmduo5540.htm).

Shredders are not limited to just paper. Many businesses discard CDs and DVDs on a regular basis. CDs and DVDs have the ability to store thousands of pages of data, making them often more vulnerable to information theft than paper alone. Many shredders have the ability to shred CDs and DVDs into tiny, unreadable pieces. Many shredders have the ability to shred old credit cards as well.

ABC Office, a dealer of paper shredders, has received several calls from clients who have experienced problems due to dumpster diving. ABC Office helps direct people in the right direction to help prevent the theft of important information. They have a special guide that offers information to help prevent ID theft (http://www.abcoffice.com/fraud.htm).
