Interested in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) but not sure what to do and where to start? Want some information with which to talk to the board? Need practical examples of how other companies are using CSR to achieve sustainable business success? Article 13 can help you.

As part of their ongoing programme Article 13, the leading corporate social responsibility experts, have researched and released a feature looking at how business can cope in the face of massive, unpredictable change.

Below is a synopsis of Article 13's feature article, "Coping with Unpredictable Change". The article can be accessed in full at www.article13.com.

PR9.NET November 21, 2005 - The world is increasingly difficult to predict, providing a compelling case for why organisations need to change. To adapt to unpredictable events, organisations need to develop ways of operating which are opportunistic, flexible and nimble. What changes can we imagine? How will business cope?

As Article 13's last update on leapfrogging explored, no business can expect that what has produced business success in the past will do so again. Technology is enabling rapid change, but change is not just driven by technology and people. Some of the biggest changes that business has to deal with come from nature, and those changes are the most difficult to predict.

The tsunami of Christmas 2004 could not have been predicted. As well as engaging business in Europe and the USA on a scale of giving as never seen before, the ramifications for businesses dealing with those markets, or with supply chains, in tsunami-affected areas are still working their way through profit and loss forecasts. Similarly, while those who have been predicting climate change impacts have been warning of increased 'extreme weather' events around the world, the precise path and timing of Hurricane Katrina that laid waste to New Orleans, was not predictable in any way that makes sense for strategic business planning.

Change is unpredictable and inevitable. Businesses with long-term plans are ill-equipped to adapt to unpredictable events. In order to break the cycle of business as usual, organisations could abandon long term planning and develop ways of operating which are adaptive, flexible and nimble. Businesses need to accept that they cannot avoid such unpredictable change and prepare themselves to capitalise on change in a big, volatile world.

Our research outlines the recipe for avoiding risk and giving your business the best chance and emphasises the need to be flexible and recognise that anything can change. Innovation and imagination are central to developing an appropriate strategy to deal with unpredictable change.

The fittest organisations will be those that cope with ever more unpredictable change, and cope well. These organisations will realise that they are part of a messy, complex world and enable their staff to adapt products and services to meet the needs they find in that world. The best organisations will improve human well-being and environmental quality at the same time as delivering their own success. But those organisations are few and far between at the moment.
