Hughes of the Hughes Trustco Group (disabilitylifeinsurance.com) announced that, effective immediately, Canada Life has drastically cut their premiums for disability insurance clients in Canada. If you smoke cigars, a pipe or cigarillos, you will be considered a non-smoker. Thus your premium rates for short term disability insurance and long term disability insurance will be the same as for non smokers. "Long term disability insurance premiums are heavily influenced by lifestyle factors, so this is definitely a step ahead for the consumer. A smoker may have a healthier lifestyle than a non smoker. Thus a heavy drinker may be more at risk than a light smoker. This problem has now been addressed , at least partially", said Mr. Hughes.
